Blueberry Health Observations
Blueberries, when compared to other
berries have small seeds, thin skins,
vibrant flavour, attractive colour and
good storage capability.
Blueberries also contain one of the
highest levels of antioxidants, including
flavonoids and phenolic compounds, of
any other fruit or vegetable. Researchers
have linked blueberries to the reduction
of “bad” cholesterol and slowing of age
related memory loss. Increased
recognition of these and other health
benefits have contributed to the recent
vast increase in demand worldwide.

Blueberry Plant Information
Blueberry plants are perennial woody
shrubs that mature in 5 to 7 years.
Canes emerge from a central crown, and
each plant typically produces 15 to 18
upright canes by maturity. Growth habit
is usually upright, although some
cultivars have a spreading form.
Blueberry plants are deciduous,
reaching full dormancy during the winter
months. Most highbush blueberry
cultivars require over 1000 hours below
7°C to satisfy their chilling requirement.
